Alejandro Jodorowsky Wants Your Money
To help fund his new film...

Alejandro Jodorowsky Wants Your Money

As studio purse strings tighten on everything but a few tent-pole films, creative types are turning to other sources of revenue to help get their work on screen. And while private funding drives have in the past been controversial (with one or two proving illegal), the rise of Kickstarter and other opportunities has seen indie filmmakers looking outside of the usual channels. Now directors such as Alejandro Jodorowsky and Paul Schrader are giving it a punt.

Jodorowsky isn’t actually using Kickstarter itself, but has set up something similar to dragoon in the money he needs to make La Danza De La Realidad, his latest project.

Set in his hometown of Tocopilla, in Northern Chile, it’ll chronicle a fantastical version of the first five years of his life. Because of the more personal nature of the movie, he’s decided to work outside the usual studio system. Take a look at the invitation below.

On a related note, director Paul Schrader and writer Bret Easton Ellis are also looking to raid our collective cash pool for funding on their new film, The Canyons. With a script from Ellis and Schrader looking to call the shots, the eventual movie will apparently follow five twentysomethings’ quest for love, power, sex and success in present-day Hollywood.

With producer Braxton Pope pushing the crowd-sourced funding model, the filmmakers are hoping to raise $100,000 by June 9, with various incentives ranging from a poster to producer credits and having Ellis critique a novel or script.

Their pitch is below. Let us know if you decide to contribute any of your hard-earned cash...
