Sundance Announces 2012 Competition Pics

With awards season in full swing, it might seem odd to be thinking about movies that likely won’t see the inside of regular cinemas for months, but the Sundance 2012 Film Festival is making sure cinephiles have them in mind, announcing the first of its schedules, the films and documentaries showing in competition.

Among the line-up are two titles featuring Scott Pilgrim’s Mark Webber, The End Of Love, which he wrote, directed and stars in alongside Michael Cera, Jason Ritter and Amanda Seyfried, and romantic drama Save The Date, which sees him acting with Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie and Geoffrey Arend (AKA Mr Christina Hendricks, AKA lucky, lucky, lucky git).

There are the usual blend of arty topics and spicier films, including Simon Killer, which sees a college grad falling for a prostitute and Sheldon Candis' LUV, featuring an orphaned 11-year-old Baltimore lad learning harsh truths about his uncle.

We’re also intrigued by Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed, which features Cyrus co-director Mark Duplass in acting mode as a man trying to recruit people to go time-travelling with him. Given that he demands applicants show up with their own weapons, we’re guessing he’s not the Doctor Who type. And could he also be a paranoid weirdo? The cast also features Parks & Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza.

Also on our radar? Rubber director Quentin Dupieux's new, strange offering, Wrong. Which has, not coincidentally, burped out its first trailer today.

“We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers," said Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford in a statement. "So what are they doing? What are they saying? They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straightforward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting.”

For the full breakdown, head on over to Sundance’s site.
