Gary Oldman Offered Akira?
Helena Bonham Carter also up for a role

Gary Oldman Offered Akira?

Now that it has finally stumbled out of the development forest and emerged blinking into the greenlight of pre-production, Warner Bros.’ live-action remake of classic anime Akira is wasting no time trying to lock down cast members. The latest actors rumoured to be on the receiving end of offers? Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter.

The team at Twitch has heard that Oldman and Carter – both big names, respected actors and well known to the Warners bods given their roles in the Harry Potter series – are being sought to play a colonel and Lady Miyako respectively.

From the sounds of Carter’s role, the original film’s setting of Neo Tokyo may yet be retained, though it could just be a fan-pleasing nod. For now, of course, this all remains in the world of rumour as neither actor is confirmed to be in negotiations.

The same is currently true for Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund, who is apparently the frontrunner for the lead role of a biker gang boss who must deal with the apocalyptic fallout when his friend is kidnapped and used in a government experiment to tap his psychokinetic abilities to terrifying effect.

With Unknown’s Jaume Collet-Serra aiming to start directing from Steve Kloves’ script early next year, except plenty more Akira casting stories to start leaking out before long…

Story plot
Make sure the plot or screenplay of the movie is similar to the actual comics. Hope to see the movie soon. I love the comics, read them at least 20 each. More

RE: Gary Oldman Offered Akira?
Rather than casting white actors in the roles, why not just change the character names? I don't even think changing the setting to Neo LA would make a difference. Better that than a situation like Airbender; where the paranoid losers on the internet lose their shit at "racist" Hollywood... More

As much as I have alot of time for both actors, I still think that it should be an all Japanese cast. I hope they retain Neo Tokyo at least, although now I am trying to figure out which 'Hollywood' actor would make a good Keneda and Tetsuo... More

If this must be...
then I say do it right. I saw the headline on Empire's Facebook page and commented that the roles GO et HBC should play are exactly what is reported here. EGO BOOST!!! Apart from that, I don't see why this movie couldn't be set in Neo Toyko. Yeah, have American (white) leads, but you can have a biker gang comprised of American, Japanese, whatever. The role of Kaneda could be changed to that of a rebellious army brat (cept now grown) who had taken in Tetsuo (also an army brat who got picked More

Not sure..
I just can't see this working - this is such an architypal Japanese story that I can't see it translating properly, the idea of phsycics in the western world doesn't have quite the same impact as it does in the east, I don't see how they can build the same story and keep faithful to the orgiginal material.
