Wachowskis Start Jupiter Ascending
A new sci-fi franchise for the duo

Wachowskis Start Jupiter Ascending

Lana and Andy Wachowski might be busy co-directing complex novel adaptation Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer right now, but the pair is also looking to get back to the genre that has served them so well in the past. The Matrix creators are now setting up sci-fi action franchise Jupiter Ascending, which will be based over at Warner Bros.

Naturally, given the secretive nature of the Wachowskis, just about everything to do with the movie, the first news of which broke over at Twitch, is being kept tightly under wraps. But Deadline was able to ferret out that it’s an original idea and the plan is to start shooting it in the spring. The studio is apparently starting to work up a list of actors to take the main roles and we’d put good money on producer Joel Silver being involved in some fashion.

So it appears that Jupiter will be the duo’s next film – though they have been trying to get controversial drama Cobalt Neural 9 financed, there doesn’t seem to have been much interest in trying to fund the tale. Plus there was some chatter late last year on them crafting an updated take on Robin Hood, but unless Jupiter Ascending features space-borne outlaws, it sounds like that one is also on hold for now.

We’d say that more details about the new film should start to leak once the Wachowskis hit the press tour for Cloud Atlas, but with their notorious lack of interest in talking to journalists, the information is probably going to have to come from elsewhere…
