Robert Rodriguez Considering Deadpool?
Fox has sent him the script…

15 June 2010  |  Written by James White  |  Source: LA Times

With 20th Century Fox aiming to get all of its mutant spin-off projects up and running (except, perhaps, for poor old X-Men Origins: Magneto, which always seems to be the forgotten kid at the back of the class), word has been flying these last few days of some interesting developments regarding the Merc With A Mouth. Thanks to a story that ran in the paper version of Production Weekly, rumours have been rife that Robert Rodriguez has been “offered” the gig directing Deadpool.

Now the LA Times has done some legwork and discovered that while sources are jibber-jabbering about the man behind Predators and the upcoming Machete, he’s only been sent the script to consider, and nothing has been formally offered at this stage.

And it’s not tough to see their point: while Rodriguez and Fox appear to have developed a healthy working relationship thanks to his overseeing Predators and making Machete, the latter isn’t finished yet and no-one knows how it’ll perform. Plus, he’s still got to earn back some cred after the disappointing openings for Shorts and Grindhouse.

But with Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick having scribbled the latest draft of the script, which is probably sitting on Rodriguez desk right now gathering taco sauce stains, he’s certainly an interesting choice to tackle Deadpool, depending on whether he wants to have anything to do with it.

And any real movement will have to wait until Ryan Reynolds is finished battling evil as Green Lantern before it can move ahead.

What say you? Do you think Rodriguez is a good match for the mouthy mutant?

I'd like to see a Marvel movie by Roberto Rodrigeuz. But I also want Sin City 2. Where is that movie? More

Mexican cuisine aside
Rodriguez is a perfect fit for Deadpool. In my mind I've always pictured the film as a blend of Alfie (protagonist addresses audience), Amelie (inventive, left-field visuals), and Shoot'em Up (violence, violence and lots more violence). Plus inject a generous dosage of pop culture references and a few digs at other Marvel property and you're close to the hitting the bullseye. It's the kind of thing Rodriguez can pull off. More

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!
And NO! Don't bother with some shitty spin-off nonsense about a fast-talking guy who CANNOT DIE OR GET WOUNDED. Please do Sin City 2. We've waited long eough. More

RE: Taco sauce stains?!?
Most Marvel adaptations get the thumbs up from me. I remember buying the Venom mini series back in 1994 where he fought Deadpool, and I always thought he looked pretty cool. More

RE: "Do you think Rodriguez is a good match for the mouthy mutant?"
Well to be honest it wasnt so much he lacked humour because the very few scenes he was in were funny till the point ...they turned him into what they wanted to call deadpool *shudders* ...but if they had given reynolds more screen time pre-op it would have been a lot funnier, i hope RR does take on the project i think he would handle it very well. RR likes tacos. Deadpool loves chimichangas. It's a match made in heaven. More

I bet he turns it down
I hate what Fox have been doing to the X series since The Last Stand but I'm actually interested in seeing a Deadpool film providing it stands alone from the rest of the X-Men films. Rodriguez won't do it though unless he can rebuild it from the ground up; he's not a journeyman who's hired for anything these days - he developes his own stuff and (for better or worse when you consider Spy Kids and Shark Boy) just gets it going. Fox obviously have confidence in him being able to produce seeing More

So not only must Rodriguez eat tacos because he's of hispanic origin, but he's also a messy eater?! For shame! More

In a word - Yes. I used to be a fan of ol' Wade back in the early Liefeld / Nicieza / X-Force days and I know that the character has developed in leaps & bounds ever since but I'd much sooner see RR in charge of the project than some newbie. Perhaps he can inject some much needed humour and charisma into the character that was so desperately lacking in the awful WOLVERINE movie. More
