World Excl: Jackson/Del Toro Talk Hobbit The duo reveal the make-up of both films
And the world exclusives from our 20th birthday issue – guest-edited by Steven Spielberg – continue to pile up…
We’ve known for a while that Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro’s eagerly-awaited adaptation of the Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit, would comprise two movies, due in December 2011 and 2012. But the make-up of those two movies has been up for debate… until now.
We spoke exclusively to both Del Toro and Jackson for our birthday issue, and they told us the latest, which is…
“We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur,” says Del Toro.
“We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie,” adds Jackson. “The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy.”
So there you go. The second film will not, as had previously been suggested, a film that will bridge the 60-year gap between The Hobbit and the start of Fellowship Of The Ring.
For much more from Jackson and Del Toro on their plans for the return to Middle-earth, pick up the 20th birthday issue of Empire, on sale next Thursday (23rd April) - or you can pre-order your copy here.

Starting to become kinda cynical about this - whats wrong with one decent 3 hour movie? The Hobbit isn't exactly split anywhere. That plus the fact that after the Hellboy 2 fiasco I sort of question Del Toro's work in English, adds to my growing doubts. They could at least release them closer together, or does that not make enough cash?

I was looking forward to seeing a movie that spanned events between The Hobbit and LOTR.....mainly because I read the books, but simply haven't the patience to read Tolkien Appendices or Silmarillion-style history books (and I did try!). ... Read More

SPOILER WARNNG FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NEVER READ THE BOOK!! (shame on you....)
How're Del Toro and Jackson going to work the bit with the Trolls? Surely LotR has already established that Trolls can quite happily exist in sunlight and aren't the most articulate of creatures. The Hobbit has them holding conversations and then turning to stone when the sun rises??

This is appalling news. I have just spent the weekend watching the extended versions of all three Lord of the Rings films and they are wonderful (well, the elves are kind of boring, actually). But the Hobbit? Two films? C'mon.
The Hobbit's charm is the simplicity of its story-telling. It cracks along at a decent pace and has none of the pomposity, self-importance or occasional tedium (there, I said it) of the Lord of the Rings.
If ever a book was crying out for a brisk 90-minute adaptati... Read More

I was pleased to read that Del Toro is doing this. He has a talent for fairy tales and the Hobbit is a good old fashioned fairy tale. However I would of prefered Jackson as far away from this project as possible and for him to go back to tuning lawn mowers. ... Read More
