Ang Lee Is Hungry For The Life Of Pi
Director set to adapt Yann Martel novel

18 February 2009  |  Written by Chris Hewitt

Ang Lee is in talks to direct the long-awaited adaptation of Yann Martel’s best-selling, Booker Prize-winning novel, The Life Of Pi. Mmm… pi.

Readers may recall that M. Night Shyamalan had been set to write and direct the movie, which sees a young man survive the sinking of a freighter, only to find himself sharing the sole lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, an injured zebra and – uh-oh! – a Bengal tiger.

But, even though the material seemed to be right up his twisty street, M. Night decided to focus on his kids’ sci-fi flick, The Last Airbender. Which, to anyone for whom The Happening happened, is something of a relief. Then Jean-Pierre Jeunet came on, wrote a draft with Guillaume Laurent, and left, almost as quickly as he had arrived. And now Lee looks like he’ll be the one to actually serve up Pi.

Lee, one of the best directors working today, is currently in post-production on Taking Woodstock, a comedy with Emile Hirsch and Demetri Martin. If he takes on The Life Of Pi, it will be another 90-degree turn for a man who is almost impossible to pigeonhole. But a commendable one, nonetheless – he should be a perfect fit for this most lyrical of books.

Gil Netter is producing for Fox 2000, which will be hiring a screenwriter soon (what, is James Schamus not available?).

An adaptation of one of my favourite books, directed by one of my favourite directors? It'll either be perfect or a horrible mess. Will probably have to watch through my fingers! More

Awww hell no!
One of my favourite books of all time. One of the most overrated directors of all time. Colour me disappointed. Was really looking forward to Jeunet's take. Those who think Ang Lee is right for this obviously read a different book, or thought Hulk was good. One or t'other definitely. The Ice Storm aside, I've always been underwhelmed by Lee's films. RE:
L: LORD LIONAL I've always thought the only way to do the book justice would be to animate it. Oh well. He'd better not screw it up. ell you never know. As the article said, he's never been easy to stick a label on. Maybe he'll shoot it in a Scanner Darkly style, or Beowulf motion capture. I'd think it more likely it'll be traditionaly done but you can never be sure with Lee. More

In the right hands, this could be a cracker and Ang Lee, on the surface, seems an almost perfect fit. Loved the book and the twist in the tale has the potential to be one of the most startling in the history of films................................EVER!! More

BEST NEWS ALL YEAR
My favorite book to be adapted by one the the most consistently brilliant director. You couldn't ask for a better choice to direct a story as poetic as this. There are scenes in this especially near the end that need to be handled with the lightest of touches and Ang Lee certainly can handle these. I also agree, Dev Patel, would be great More

Obvious casting decision?
In light of this season's award hubbub Dev Patel is surely a perfect fit for the star? More
