Tobey Maguire Sees Good People
Producing new crime adaptation

21 January 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

Tobey Maguire has bought the rights to Good People, a new crime drama based on the novel by Marcus Sakey, and the once and future Spider-Man has first dibbs on the lead role in the film.

The story has echoes of Shallow Grave or A Simple Plan (and even the premise of No Country For Old Men) in that it involves ordinary people finding a large sum of money. This time, it's a couple, Tom and Anna Reed, in debt from several rounds of fertility treatment. They think their worries are over when they stumble upon $370,000 in their deceased tenant's apartment, and decide to keep the money for themselves. Only problem is, of course, that someone out there is looking for it.

The script adaptation will be written by Kelly Masterson, the playwright who broke into Hollywood with Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Let's hope whatever he comes up with stands apart from other similar starting points.
