Sony Developing Venom Movie?
Spidey's nemesis to get another chance

31 July 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

submit to reddit

Despite being added to please fans, Venom's treatment in Spider-Man 3 was generally very poorly received by lovers of Peter Parker's alien nemesis. Sony may be about to atone for that mis-step with the news today that the studio is developing a spin-off for the character.

Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) has already been commissioned to write a script, although The Hollywood Reporter says that Sony may decide to pass on that script and is looking at new writers. With no script in place, there's no news on which version of Venom the movie would follow. It could be Eddie Brock (played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3, though Grace has not been approached to reprise his role), which would require some back-pedalling given the end of of Spidey 3, or it could be one of the later characters who are overtaken by the alien symbiote. If Sony was feeling particularly daring, it could even be a woman, based on the comic book lore.

This possible movie wouldn't replace Spider-Man 4, which Sony is still hoping to release in 2011.

The question is, if you make a movie that focuses on a beloved villain, who do you pit him against? It would be enormously surprising for Sony to put Spidey in this movie and still call it a Venom film, so who should they have him battling, other than the evil within? Do you want to see a Venom movie, or would you rather see him left alone?

I meant to post this when on the blog with the topic of "multiple villians in films" but i might as well post it here. Although this is not much to do with the prospect of a Venom film but more about Spider-man 3. It was a let down, not just because of the multiple villains but the way the story was carried out which allowed very little time to show the development of the characters. The moment I came out the cinema after seeing Spider-man 2, I thought the film was great and set More

considering just the spider-man films, how can venom be considered a nemesis? most of his "nemeses" die within about 3 days of meeting spider-man. Hardly a length of time to build up a decent amount of hatred. Plus most of his villains end up dieing with remorse. I want mine to go out with hatred. Granted this may or may not have happened with venom, as I blocked out spiderman three from my mind, due to crappiness of it. More

If they pay me to do it, I've no problem with that. ;) Magneto is different, because the character has a long and complex history and an interesting back story (and even so, the viability of a standalone movie even for him is dubious).  Venom is a cartoon character in every sense of the word and I just can't see him holding up a movie which would appeal to more than a few die-hard fans alone. Because he's badass?  Ridiculous.  So is Juggernaut (in the comics), so is The Joker, but they don't get their own movies because they only make sense in context of X-Men and Batman respectively.  Same with Venom - as a foil to Spidey, he was interesting (for a while - but he's been totally overused in comics to the point of being neutered now frankly) More

You're in the minority of the minority.  Most people think Venom should not have been there in the first place, so who played him is irrelevant really. Raimi was using the Lee/Ditko/Romita run as his inspiration.  Everything we'd seen up until 3 was a logical extension of that - and Sandman was a part of that. Venom was an 80s creation, which, in order to get even halfway 'faithful' would have required a whole 'nother story arc - the very least they could have done was to have it something to do with a John Jameson space mission, but no, even that was wasted/missed in their half-assed shoehorning in of something that dn't fitUndersta More

Sony won't care about continuity, faithfulness to the comic or integrity.  If they can make it with Uwe Boll for $20million, they will. They will be asking one question - of the script, of the director, of the effects team, of the rating (PG13/12A maximum without a doubt) - will it sell toys and make us rich(er)? To be honest, if Sony were to make a stand alone Venom film, I fear it may be hit or miss, I hope it would be hit for my taste. It is very difficult, with the ending of Spider man 3, the script writers could always go for the story line of Venom being transported to an alternate reality????? If this is the case then, you could pit Venom up against Carnage, this would solve the issue of which carachter to pit Venom against. The point is not all Comics/Graphic novels are juvenile or light and as such should be treated seriously and in the right tone. Batman is an occasionally very dark character. Although Spiderman is very much a a character you can treat lightly or more humerously (the 1 & 2 where very good IMO) the period with Venom was a conciously darker period of his history and should have treated in the right fashion. Venom is a great character(s), but this must be approached with care, after the panzy they got in to play Eddie in spiderman 3, its gonna be difficult to move away from that. Don't get me wrong cred to the actor who played the part in spidey 3, he didnt get much screen time to work with. But Eddie is a older (much) guy that peter parker and he's massive, like BIG!
