Resident Evel McG to direct Evel Knievel biopic

Forget Ben Affleck – there’s only one daredevil, and that’s Evel Knievel. Whether leaping shark tanks or canyons on his motorbike or riding through a wall of fire, Evel maintained the positive mental attitude and clean-living lifestyle that made him an American icon. He may have crash landed an alarming number of times and broken more bones than Jackie Chan but he still got back on and tried for that extra couple of double-deckers.
The sheer implausibility of Evel’s life makes him perfect Hollywood material, and now McG has signed on to direct a new film about Knievel’s life. Pure Evel will focus on a fairly short period of Knievel’s career, between his rise to fame and his much hyped and near-fatal rocket powered attempt to jump Snake River Canyon.
McG is also currently working on a Hot Wheels movie, as well as the still-troubled Superman project. He is taking time out, however, to go with screenwriter Andrew Walker to meet Knievel who is currently recovering from back surgery.
Judging by the dirt-bike scenes in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, McG should be able to handle the stunts in this film, but can he capture the icon that is Evel Knievel? This is a sportsman who once had his name painted on the side of his Lear jet - and then bought another so he could fly alongside and admire it. Frankly, we’re not sure that the big screen is big enough. |
