Kevin Smith has signed a deal with Miramax to write and direct a new installment of the Fletch series, which could be the start of a franchise for the company. The source material will be the novels of Gregory McDonald, whose work was popularised through the movie adaptations Fletch and Fletch Lives, both of which starred Chevy Chase as the laidback hero.

Smith reveals that for the role of Fletch, "Off the top of my head, I'm leaning towards Ben Affleck". He also wants to get Chevy Chase involved in some capacity.
