New Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser
'There's greatness in you...'

Star Trek Into Darkness

Last week brought the"announcement trailer"; now Star Trek Into Darkness has a full-on teaser right here that drops a few more hints about the film. It's still only two minutes long, but you can now rest assured that there's lots of space action as well as the planet-bound stuff, and that Benedict Cumberbatch sounds really sinister.

What else did we spot? Well, those who were lucky enough to see the Star Trek Into Darkness prologue in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this weekend will be familiar with that red forest through which Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Dr McCoy (Karl Urban) are running, and the volcano that appears to be erupting at one point. For those who didn't see it, they're trying not to break Starfleet's Prime Directive and avoid contact with a primitive race while simultaneously saving that race from a volcanic disaster.

You may also be able to draw certain conclusions from the sight of Noel Clarke dropping a large tablet in a glass of water; namely, that he accepted an offer made by Benedict Cumberbatch's villain to save Clarke's daughter's life.

New snippets include someone rocketing through space, multiple shots of space battles from both inside and outside the ships, and a new look at Cumberbatch's villain in that HAL-9000-looking cell. The final shot from the Japanese version of the announcement trailer, with the hands meeting on either side of a pane of glass, is included here and still reminds us very strongly of that guaranteed tear-jerker in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

Why, at this rate we should be able to figure out who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing, for definite, by - hang on, let's just calculate this, carry the one...Oh. It's going to take until May 17 at the current rate of drip-feeding. Which just happens to be the day that Star Trek Into Darkness hits cinemas anyway. Oh well, at least it's only five more months.

Who do you think Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in Star Trek Into Darkness?
Khan Noonien Singh
Gary Mitchell
John Harrison, as listed officially. He's a new guy.

Not Khan but...
Maybe they rebooted Gary Mitchell to be someone before Kirk but both Spock and Pike knew, and the speech is from Pike to Cumberbatch (flashback)? Mission goes wrong, crew perished except Cumberbatch who returns after some possible augmentations looking for revenge. More

RE: New Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser
Would it be beyond JJ to "kill" off Kirk in a cruel twist of fate. Only to then explore the methods of reintroducing Kirk in a 3rd movie that would perhaps form part of a JJ Star Trek Trilogy - his swan song much the same as Nolans Batman reinvention??  Ending his trilogy with the resurrection of Kirk and not of Spock. Its not without merit.  He has certainly started off the series in the first movie by disrupting a whole timeline and creating an alternate universe and& More

RE: I agree with Dave25...
There was a Klingon Bird of Prey/Warbird in there, wasn't there? Can't remember my Trek ship names at the minute. More

The way he & Kirk looked at each other at the end plus the mention of family has me thinking? More

RE: I agree with Dave25...
Didn't Karl Urban already let slip who the villain was a few months back? Denials swiftly followed but I'm not surehow convinced I am by them. Then again it could all be part of an elaborate plan.. Trailer looks great BTW More

I agree with Dave25...
....those pods..could hold supermen.....If we see a new Khan emerge from one of those pods, that would be awesome. There's talk that we are going to see Klingons (That shot of the Enterprise in space needs freeze framing (1.16)..Another ship in the background? Klingon?) All in all, this looks awesome! More

If it is someone new (John Harrison), I guess it's going to be a bit of anti-climax isn't it? especially with a high percentage of people thinking it's Khan.. More

There is only one logical explanation
Who else could bear so much anger and hatred for this Federation? Who could be so hell-bent on causing this widescale destruction - of ships and even on Earth? Who else has cause for such vengeance? Cumberbatch is clearly playing a die-hard fanboy who considers the re-boot as sacrilege. Elementary, my dear Trekkers. More

Maybe not Khan but...
He might be one of the other genetic supermen working for Khan, there is a shot in the trailer of some oddly (old fashioned?) dressed people walking away from what looks like a bank of pods/coffins? Possibly the cryo pods Khan and his cronies were put into after the Eugenics wars? More

With all respect to Mr Cumberbatch, he's not right for Khan...
The character of Khan has to be a masculine alpha-male, who's catnip to the ladies and is believeable as a man 'who held power over millions'. He's a remnant from an obsolete patriarchal society, and he'd be attractive to the women of the 23rd century because of his rugged, unrefined masculinity. Standing in stark contrast to the well-behaved, clean-cut, momma's boys of Starfleet. He's essentially the ultimate bad boy. The guy the daughter brings home to upset her parents. In other words, he can More

Empire's assuming Pike's talking to Kirk...
...I think he's talking to Cumberbatch. This dude works for Starfleet, I tells ya! He's the evil mirror of Kirk and, in a wrath of khan homage and switcheroo JJ's gonna off Kirk instead of Spock and the third film's gonna be the Search for Kirk! Think I'm wrong? I've seen it! a dream. More

Gotta say, I'd have thought WETA would do a better job with the CGI make-up. Cumberbatch doesn't look anything like a dragon in this trailer. More
