Do cheer up, 007! You always look so glum, and now you’ve got reason to buy a round of Heineken vodka martinis. Yes, Skyfall smashed through predictions and broke Bond records to launch with $87.8 million at the US box office. Adding in the early overnight screenings, the film is now up to $90 million Stateside, surely on its way to becoming the most successful Bond film worldwide.

Sensibly, no studio dared launch a wide release against Mr Bond (though Lincoln did well in award-qualifying limited launch, taking in $900,000 from 11 cinemas), which means most of the films just dropped one place. Wreck-It Ralph held well for second place, earning $33 million, while Flight was down to third and $15.1 million. Argo was fourth, making $6.7 million and Taken 2 stayed in place to round out the top five with $4 million.

The biggest surprise was Here Comes The Boom, which inexplicably leapt back to sixth from ninth, taking home $2.55 million in the process. That put it ahead of Cloud Atlas in seventh with $2.52 million and Pitch Perfect, which itself rose back from 11th to eighth with $2.5 million. Ninth was The Man With The Iron Fists, earning $2.4 million, while Hotel Transylvania dropped to 10th place with $2.3 million.
