Arndt Wrote Star Wars Treatments

Update: Disney and Lucasfilm have made it official, confirming Arndt as writing the script for at least the first of the new trilogy. In related news, another chunk of the George Lucas / Kathleen Kennedy discussion video is online and you can see that above.


The shocking and downright exhilarating news of Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and announcing new Star Wars adventures did not come as a surprise to everyone. Within the two companies, negotiations had been going on for months, and George Lucas even said that he’d written outlines for at least three more films. Now there's a report on who has turned them into a treatment for Star Wars: Episode VII and beyond: Toy Story 3’s Michael Arndt.

Vulture, which is currently in the market for a place to unload the bodies of many Bothan spies, brings word that Arndt had quietly been hired to start cranking out the treatment long before the shockwave October 30 announcement.

No official confirmation has been given, but Arndt would seem a good call. After winning an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, he was recruited by Disney / Pixar to write the third Toy Story film and delivered something truly special. He’s also been at work on other projects, including the still untitled Pixar mind project. Plus, he’s a die-hard Star Wars fan who has lectured on the first trilogy’s scripts at screenwriting seminars. So while he hasn’t made a deal to write the actual screenplay, he’s certainly someone we could see making it work.

According to Vulture’s sources, the Mouse House is definitely looking to bring back Han, Luke and Leia. And the biggest names in blockbuster directing town (your Spielberg, your Abrams, and, given his ties to Disney / Pixar and his all-round awesomeness, your Brad Bird) will of course get the first look. One person who might look but doesn’t seem to want to touch is Zack Snyder, who has told the LA Times, "I don’t think I’d be interested in directing it. I’m a huge Star Wars fanatic. I just think doing episodes seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope." For those of you keeping score, that's a "no" from Snyder, Sam Mendes, Gareth Evans, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino; the rest of Hollywood still to report in.

Darker doesnt always mean better you know.Star Wars is sci-fi fantasy and adventure so it should be a lot of fun.Besides the last movie we got ( ROTS ) was great but as it was such a downer i think its time for the next film to be lighter.Not that it should be an More

If Lucas wanted to make these films himself, he could have just done it. Why go through some charade of hiring another writer, and then trying trying to force his will on them? I'm willing to accept that Lucas is actually stepping away. Its fair enough him being a creative consultant. This is a real chance for Star Wars films at least better than the prequels. More

Dare I dream

Wow, George Lucas looks like he does not want to be there at all in that clip. His body language in it is fascinating. This is the first time we've seen him speak since the Disney deal. The control freak has given up control and it's written all over his face. Notice the puppy dog eyes when he looks at the new head of his company and his impatient, restless hands doing constant comfort gestures. More

And So It Begins...
I'd like to see Joseph Kosinski who made Disney's Tron Legacy get to direct Star Wars 7. I thought that was a dazzling-looking film. Or you could hire Martin Campbell who made two superb James Bond movies in Casino Royale and GoldenEye. George Lucas did a great job on the first two Star Wars films but the next four left a lot to be desired. (Instead of milking fans of money with three prequel movies, Lucas should really have done one good 3-hour film of Anakin's turn to the dark side.) More

Everything about this is sounding great. The rumours suggest that Hamill, Fischer & Ford are on board now. See, all it took was Lucas to get out of the way. I should note that I'm not a Lucas hater. It's just that he's a terrible writer and director. Kudos to the man though for letting go of his baby and for giving all of the proceeds of the sale to charity.
