If there is any film that would benefit from a well-constructed conversion into 3D, you’ve got to figure that Warner Bros.’ new Superman story Man Of Steel would be the one. Now the studio and director Zach Snyder have gone ahead with the process, which means you’ll be able to watch the film in a variety of formats.
Announced on the movie’s Facebook page, the move isn’t exactly a surprise. An IMAX web employee with an itchy release finger unknowingly leaked word earlier this year - and besides, Warners has had some success with conversions on the Harry Potter films. But now we have the official confirmation.
“The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX,” says Snyder. “Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man Of Steel to captivate those moviegoers, while respecting fans that prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”
It’s nice to see Snyder and co respecting the fact that not everyone wants or can see 3D movies, and given the man’s visual style (plus non-3D fan Chris Nolan as producer), we’re certain he’ll have kept the quality level high. We just hope that the 3D works better than it did in Superman Returns, where 3D-ified action scenes suffered from a clash of format and shaky-cam shooting - during that opening plane crash, for instance.
For now, we’ll have to wait until June 14 to see the final result on Man Of Steel. One of the two latest trailer variants is below.

I really like 3D, especially IMAX 3D. Bad 3D is distracting but good 3D is great. But what's really, truly stupid is complaining about the mere existence of 3D just because you don't dig it yourself. What's 3-D?
I've never considered seeing a movie in 3-D, what's the point?!
As long as production is good, solid script and bloody good acting and no overloaded with cgi you got a good movie. Minimal in all aspects. More

Why 3D is crap
There are actually good reasons to despise 3D. First off the tone and colour degradation. I believe one of the guys who worked on Toy Story said you lose up to 30% of the image quality. Secondly you have to wear glasses to help consolidate the image. This is because the brain is trying to marry what is actually more than one viewpoint but it can't do it with real accuracy. Will be avoiding the 3D...
...and I greatly suspect that it will not have actually been filmed in IMAX, given the comparative lateness of this announcement, which really renders the whole effort of going to the IMAX rather pointless, as I found with Inception. More

Oh joy. Crappy 3-D. Again. So long as some cinemas actually do bother with 2-D showings(unlike Dredd), I'll catch this. A proper trailer would be nice...
y thoughts exactly. I was really annoyed that Dredd was unavailable in 2D. The 3D in the film was really poor. Even films which have put real time and effort into the 3D (Avatar & Prometheus) have disappointed me. I've yet to find one where I haven't preferred the 2D version.
