Ever since Monsters director Gareth Edwards was named as the man in charge of rebooting the world's favourite giant lizard movie franchise early last year, snippets of Godzilla news have been getting certain parts of the internet very excited indeed.

Today, then, is a momentous day for all Gareth Edwards-loving Godzilla geeks, with the official release date announced and screenwriters, producers and executive producers all confirmed.

As you may have deduced from the top of this story, the date in question is May 16, 2014 and as you may not have deduced from the top of this story, the screenwriters are David Callaham (the Expendables series), David S. Goyer (Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy) and relative newcomer Max Borenstein (Swordswallowers And Thin Men).

Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers will produce and yes, yes indeed, Monsters' Gareth Edwards will direct and in 3D. Test footage was shown at Comic-Con back in July, and for Empire's take on it, click this way.

Speaking to Empire at this year's Empire Awards, Edwards has previously said this about the project: "The thing that’s so interesting is that Godzilla has evolved since the original one in the ‘50s, so there is the opportunity to bring it up to date. But we want to stay true to the fanbase as well and I’m a fan of the Toho films."

Exciting times for all Godzilla fans, then. And just in case you missed it, Godzilla will smash into your local multiplex come May 16, 2014.
