National Treasure Writers For Uncharted
But new director needed...

24 August 2012  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Variety

National Treasure Writers For Uncharted

It's all change again on videogame adventure adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, with new writers arriving and another director departing. As you may have surmised from the news elsewhere here this morning, Neil Burger has left Uncharted behind, with a view to directing Summit Entertainment's Divergent instead. But coming through the revolving door in the other direction are Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, who'll be taking a new pass at the screenplay.

The Wibberleys wrote the Schwarzenegger vehicle The Sixth Day; Charlie's Angels sequel Full Throttle; I, Spy, with Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson, and the animated guinea pig shenanigans of G-Force. They also recently took a crack at the Highlander remake, but their most relevant experience for Uncharted is on the National Treasure films, both of which globe-trotting, loot-hunting Nic Cage adventures they penned for Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Uncharted series, should you be unaware, is a globe-trotting, loot-hunting set of games for the PS3, following our Indy-alike hero Nathan Drake on his trips to the likes of El Dorado, Shambala and the Iram of the Pillars. Along gthe way, Drake quips many a quip and shoots many a henchman. The Internet is united in wanting Nathan Fillion to play him onscreen, although back in the days when David O Russell was set to direct, it was looking like we were going to get Mark Wahlberg.

The earliest shot at the screenplay was by Sahara and Conan writers Josh Oppenheimer and Dean Donnelly. That version was jettisoned by Russell, in favour of his own vision (which seemed pretty divergent from the games), and that in turn was then crossed out and written over by Neil Burger when he came aboard. Whether The Wibberleys will be reworking what's been done before or starting entirely from scratch remains to be seen. But the project won't go out to a new director until their script is complete.

Avi and Ari Arad are producing with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, and the saga is unraveling at Sony.
