Phantom Menace 3D Trailer Arrives
You can't stop it...

25 October 2011  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Collider

submit to reddit

You may recall that, a couple of weeks ago, the poster for the first 3D reissue of the Star Wars saga arrived like an apocalyptic sign warning that The Phantom Menace was coming back to our cinemas. But even if you squeezed your eyes shut tight, plugged your ears and began humming the Imperial March at top volume, you can’t ignore the fact. And now comes the second sign: the trailer is online and can be watched below.

There’s not exactly a whole lot new to see here, and since the trailer itself is not in 3D, we’re a little confused why Lucas and co thought it needed to go online. But then any awareness is good awareness, even if you’re part of a film series that has already earned billions.

Naturally, the focus is on the stuff that will look best in 3D, with the space battles and the pod racing given the most exposure. But hey! You get to hear Peter Serafinowicz intone one of the best-remembered lines from the film. So there's a total upside here.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will be out in 3D on February 10 next year.

RE:
I'm really looking forward to this. I'm hopeful the conversions will be well-done, as they have been in gestation of years. I've also been encouraged by previous comments by Lucas about his view of what makes good use of 3D (more to increase depth of field than just to make pointy things fly out the screen, to paraphrase). Haters gonna hate. 'the only reason he's releasing it again is to make money' Yeah, well done Sherlocks, that's why 99% of films get made in the first place. More

Very tempted to check this out. The excitement surrounding PM's release is still a feeling I remember fondly. It may not have lived up to expectations, but it has some great stuff in there - love the climactic lightsaber fight, the podrace, Darth Maul, Qui-Gonn. Star Wars in 3D is a very persuasive concept, and if this is successful hopefully it will lead to the original trilogy in 3D which is a tantalising prospect. More

RE: There are bits
You know, I always loved the Phantom Menace.... But really, I always found PM to be the most 'Star Wars' of the last three. I dont know what it is, maybe that AOTC and ROTS feel like extended tv shows, whereas Phantom, despite its flaws, feels like a movie with different acts building up to the climax (the other two just kind of moved along to the next action scene). And it has Liam Neeson who, despite being the most usless Jedi ever (thanks RedLettermedia lends a sense of gravitas More

There are bits
in the movie that are ok - like the pod race... and... um...the lightsabre fight! (Thank God, thought of something) and the music is top drawer. But that means that the rest is... RUBBISH! It is, it really, really is. But I still reckon that Clones is even more horrid. Is it the Sound of Music bit with the giant cows in the meadows? Possibly the clunky effects in the arena when the Jedi try and escape? But Menace is just a mess. Maybe it's Ewan's wig? Or his acting. Or maybe it just c More

RE: Phantom Menace 3D Trailer Arrives
It's pretty pointless releasing this first. We'll end up with Revenge of the Sith in 3D 5 years after it's already been in the cinema! They should've done the original 3 first since the later movies will only get released if this does well. Since it's by far the worst of the series it should make the least money thereby jeopardising our chances of seeing the original trilogy on the big screen once more. More

RE: Phantom Menace 3D Trailer Arrives
I thought the whole point of this sorry piece of shameless advertising was to once again place 6 films which have been steadily bastardized over the decades back into our cinemas, but this time in 3D. Why then, is it going to also be shown in 2D in selected cinemas? Seems a bit pointless, as if we wanted to watch it in 2D we could just watch the VHS release, the digitally remastered VHS release, DVD, DVD special edition, theatrical version (on DVD), or Bluray.
