Hannibal Lecter Heading To TV
Okey-dokey. Here we go...

13 September 2011  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Gaumont (via Deadline)

Hannibal Lecter Heading To TV

There was a time when Hannibal Lecter was a properly chilling less-is-more villain with minimal screentime and maximum impact. Gradually though, he's become everyone's favourite mischievous uncle, and we'll get to spend even more time with him when Gaumont's Hannibal series arrives on TV.

Hannibal is an inaugural project for the new LA-based outpost of the French film studio, and will be executive produced by Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, and Martha De Laurentiis, who was behind the most recent three Lecter films, Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. It's unclear whether original author Thomas Harris is involved.

The premise revolves around the back story discussed in Red Dragon (film and book) and Manhunter: the early relationship between psychiatrist Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham, who can see inside the heads of serial killers. Quite how this will play out week-by-week remains to be seen. Are we looking at one story per season? Or individual stories about Lecter killing sprees and Graham on his trail? Or individual stories about Graham on cases, visiting Lecter for advice occasionally? Or a mismatched buddies double act, where Howlin' Mad Hannibal must be regularly sprung from the Baltimore State Hospital for another crazy adventure?

Whatever, there are no showrunners or writers attached so far, and no cast yet chosen to fill the shoes previously inhabited by Anthony Hopkins, Brian Cox, William Peterson and Edward Norton. We'll keep you posted, and in the meantime, give us your suggestions for Hannibal's TV formula (sponsored by Chianti and Napolina) in the comments below.

RE: Toothless Cannibal
L: BenTramer God, haven't they squeezed the last drop out of this lemon yet? Hannibal Lecter was once a terrifying, ferocious, classic horror villain. He got gradually more ridiculous and he's now become totally anaemic and toothless by ending up on TV. This character has gone as far as he can and needs to be laid to rest now. Or untill the remake of Slience of Lambs comes out and you know it will sooner of later. As for a TV series no leave it alone. More

This sounds like it could be fun, either as Lecter free and killing while evading capture or the more traditional "missmatched buddy cop" idea, either way i'll give it a go, especially with Bryan Fuller's involvement. So, casting? More

Sigh....
Less flogging of a dead horse and more pounding the ashen fragments of what used to be a horse unforgivingly into the ground. This stopped being fun before Hannibals credits rolled. More

Dexter influence?
This could end up being like Dexter, Hannibal is on his on killing spree/all you can eat buffet while helping the FBI solve other crimes on serial killers/random crimes (and making sure his crimes don't come back on him). Not sure whether this is a good idea or not to be honest, could work but could easily fail miserably...... Hasn't the 'FBI hiring a specialist to solve crime' been done to death now? I think the other question has to be, who could be Hannibal? More
