Writers Guild of America Noms Announced
Please Give gets a nod from the WGA

05 January 2011  |  Written by Alastair Plumb

So if you thought that the PGA nominations announced yesterday were essentially the Best Film Oscar shortlist a few weeks in advance, don't go expecting any surprises from the WGA either.

In fact, in the original screenplay category, only Please Give might prove a surprise (written by its delightful director Nicole Holofcener); the others all safe, solid picks in the form of Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception and The Kids Are All Right.

And if any of you Winter's Bone, Another Year and King's Speech fans are wondering why they aren't in there, well it seems they didn't meet the WGA's strict guidelines for submission, so hey ho, that's the way it goes.

In the Adapted Screenplay category, there's great news that I Love You Phillip Morris is getting the attention it has long deserved, as well as True Grit, which really is a bit of a masterclass in book-to-screen adaptations.

Then there's Aaron Sorkin with The Social Network in the least surprising news ever, Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy's 127 Hours... it's going to be a tough category to pick from, that one.

Anyway, thoughts, opinions, queries, anybody? Take a look at the full list below and get the debate going in the comment box below, why not.

Original Screenplay

Black Swan (Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin; story by Andres Heinz)
The Fighter (Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson; story by Keith Dorrington, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson)
Inception (Christopher Nolan)
The Kids Are All Right (Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg)
Please Give (Nicole Holofcener)

Adapted Screenplay

127 Hours (Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy)
I Love You Phillip Morris (John Requa and Glenn Ficarra)
The Social Network (Aaron Sorkin)
The Town (Peter Craig, Ben Affleck and Aaron Stockard)
True Grit (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen)
