Adrien Brody Joins Predators
Topher Grace also in talks to star

07 October 2009  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Variety

submit to reddit

Well nobody saw this coming. The star of Nimrod Antal's Predators is not a Rock or a Vin or an undiscovered new Arnie. It's the willowy Adrien Brody. Who would've thunk it?

We have, of course, seen Brody hacking through the jungle before, as Jack Driscoll in Peter Jackson's King Kong. But he's still best known for dramatic roles in films like Polanski's The Pianist, or quirky indie fare like Hollywoodland and The Darjeeling Ltd.

He's clearly looking to add some more mainstream strings to his bow however, since Brody and his agents apparently lobbied hard to get the role of "a heroic mercenary who battles to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens". Is "heroic mercenary" an oxymoron? Discuss.

That team also includes Danny Trejo, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Walton Goggins (Detective Vendrell from The Shield), Ultimate Fighter Oleg Taktarov, and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, who was Tizzy in Benjamin Button.

Brody has also signed up for sequels. He isn't the first surprise leading man of the Predator franchise: we probably wouldn't have predicted Danny Glover back in 1990 either.

Shooting will tale place in Hawaii and Texas, and starts shortly. So are we ready for Action Adrien? Your thoughts below.

Update: Equally unlikely action hero Topher Grace is also in talks to join the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What is going on???

IM EXCITED!!
I think Adrien Brody is a great talent, more than capable of bringing a touch of class to Predators, Id take him over Vin Diesel anyday, Topher Grace is a talented comic actor, Im looking forward to seeing him stretch his legs in a new genre. More

RE: Nasal Trophy
Is he the FBI's most wanted or the Jungle Survivalist?  There's a feature on Latino Review (I Think) where they run through the charcters.  I love Predator and Rodriguez, but this idea of stereotypical badasses, just sounds lame to me.  Like something you'd brainstorm out when you were 14.  A Massive Russian with a chain Gun!  A Samurai Yakuza! A Sexy and Deadly Female Assassin. Yawn. I'll still see it.  Damn my fan-boy bones. More

Gotta say if I ran through listing people for this never in a million years would I even think of Adrian Brody. He's certainly no badass. But you know there's probably gonna be a medic along for the ride and he would be ideal that. More

ADRIAN BRODY JOINS PREDATORS
Is'nt that what people were saying about Ryan Reynolds when he was cast in Blade Trinity? up to that point he was only good for teen comedies. Now people seem to put his name forward for every action/superhero role going. More

Apart from Goggins and Trejo it doesnt sound like a cast of badarses to me...especially when you look at The Expendables cast which has more beef than a butchers.   Im looking forward to it but with "super predators" and it being set in a jungle when its meant to be on the Predators planet makes me feel a little be sleepy ie yawn, than getting pumped.   I dont want another homage fest, I want something new. Cool
He's a fine actor (and probably the last person you'd like to do coke with) and I'm sure he'll bring something interesting to the movie. He's not exactly known for his action roles but I'm sure he'll be convincing enough - or maybe even a Shane Black type character. More

Brodacious!
Sorry for the terrible early nineties pun-phrase usage, but my already excited interest in this film has now shot right up. Brody is a smashing actor and love the idea of him shooting it up! I don't understand all the Topher Grace hating, just because his role in Spidey 3 wasn't the greatest, you shouldn't tar him with the same brush More

RE: Adrien Brody Joins Predators
I reckon Brody could pull off a Mercenary (fnar, fnar)! He'd have to bulk up a bit, but i think he could do "mean" and "gruff" etc. Topher Grace on the other hand i see playing a Burke-esque character (from Aliens of course) who is a twat and a bit of a pussy and will meet a nasty end at some point during the movie.  More
