New 9 Illustrations
Shane Acker's burlap beauty

Back in 2005, Shane Acker's dark, stark, post-apocalyptic fairytale 9 picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film. This year we get to see 9 in full feature-length splendour, with Acker's vision augmented by the gothic touches of co-producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, and co-writer Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride).

Voiced by Elijah Wood, the titular 9 is the film's stitch-punk hero, one of nine ragdolls given life by a scared scientist and left to lead his fellow burlap creations against the malevolent machines that roam the devasted planet.

He may sound like the exact mid-way point between John Connor and Bagpuss, but as you can see from the illustrations, 9 has a design aesthetic all of his own. As these official pics show, the art design is incredibly detailed and judging by the official trailer, they'll only be enhanced by 9's inventive CG animation.

This film is brilliant! It makes me think that this world is not full of lollipop animations. It looks dark, really dark animated film more than Coraline. All I know right now most of Japanese animations have a good story line, actions, thriller, slashers, blood and many more but this film don't need that. It's already prefect fit! Want this film won oscar. More

I'm genuinely excited by this. The trailer looks ace and the design of the characters and look of the film suggest it's not gonna be some run-of-the-mill CG market machine. Can't wait. More

Should be interesting
I saw this for the first time only 6months ago and thought it was excellent. To see such a small project become so big must be great for the people who made the short and with Tim Burton lending a hand they'll take this alternative world much further. He may be just a co-producer, but with such a dark subject matter, how could he possibly stay away. More
