Exclusive: The Goonies Talk Sequel
Never say never. Or die.

29 April 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

You may not have realised, but March 17, 2009, was an historic day. It was on that day in Hollywood, California, that all of The Goonies, including director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg, were reunited for the first time in over 20 years* to have their photo taken for Empire's 20th birthday issue.

Naturally, whenever one or more Goonies are gathered together, they're always asked about a sequel, and this time was no different. Here's a little taste of what they had to say.

Richard Donner: "We tried for a long time. Steven and I had many meetings with writers but nothing stuck. It seemed disrespectful."

Corey Feldman: "So I guess the answer about the sequel is that there's always hope."

Donner: "No. No hope."

Sean Astin: "A year from now, ten years from now, 50 years from now, I'm absolutely convinced there'll be one. We'll figure it out. A sequel could be great. It could be shitty. You never know. But the original is the thing it is and no-one can ever change it."

That said, they do of course never say die. For the full interview, including talk of unconvincing sea-monsters, Josh Brolin's fashion mistakes and discussions of a Broadway remake of the movie, pick up the new issue of Empire.

In the meantime, you can watch our video from the shoot below, and check out the resulting portrait.

*While most of them reunited for the awesome DVD commentary about 10 years ago, Spielberg wasn't there that day.

Where's the Competition?
Hey You Guys, that was an awsome feature - I jumped straight to page 62 as soon as I picked up my copy of Empire, and haven't been on this site for a while but when I realised there was a video of the reunion I had to watch it at least 3 times. One question though - the mag says there is a comp online to win a signed poster, and I wont be able to sleep until I've entered - an idea where it is!? More

Absolutely frickin awesome. I loved it. seeing everyone together again, happy to be with each other, was really lovely. Can't wait to see other re-unions: Breakfast Club, Grease, hell i'd even settle for a Top Gun get together! More

Ha!
The Uni-Goonie. It's nice / funny to see that Josh Brolin actually treats Sean Astin like his younger brother with that little taunt "I saw you a few years ago at a bar. And you were crying". Ha ha ha. Ace. More

Makes me proud....
To see that EMPIRE, despite it's humble beginings, has become THE magazine that ALL the major players turn to not only to promote the present, but also to remember the past. I've been reading since Michelle Pfeiffer popped up on the cover for Batman Returns back in 1992(never miss an issue) Thanks Empire for a little nostalgia. It was great. More

Reunions eh...?
OK. You know what would Rock? I mean BETTER than this? a PREDATOR reunion! with all this talk of a Rodriguez-Flavoured Reboot, it would be cool to see Dutch, Blain, Billy and the Guys together again for a photo-shoot. More

aww m8!!!
just watched the vid and it brought a tear to my eye. Im a sap, i know, but being that i saw this movie 3 times at the cinema back in 1985 when i was 9, & with all my friends, it just goes to show ( I agree with Snake-eyes) that is was truly is a product of its time. The 80s rocked! pure escapism! Love it to bits! More

Bad Idea
The Goonies was a true product of it's time - like so many classic 80's films. IMO, like the Spielberg-produced WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, it's worth revisiting but not rebooting. More

Goonies 2? Are they serious? That's got to be a joke. Too much time has passed. They're just far too old now and don't even resemble the people they were in 1984. If this gets made it will be one giant car crash. What a terrible idea. If they want to do bring Goonies back it would be better ito do it in the form of a videogame or animated show. More
