Joe Carnahan To Direct A-Team
Plan comes together in 2010

28 January 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

A movie version of The A-Team has been in development hell so long at this stage that it's had time to tour all seven circles, chat up all the female demons and find out for sure whether Jimmy Hoffa's dead. But good news: it has finally gotten hold of a welding torch and fashioned a crude armoured escape truck from some chains and pitchforks, and is headed back to our screens with Joe Carnahan directing and Tony and Ridley Scott producing.

The film was last in development with John Singleton set to direct, and after he dropped out screenwriter Skip Woods wrote a draft of the script. The new film will keep the origin story we all know and love, only substituting the Gulf War for Vietnam. Let's refresh our memory, shall we?

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was send to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem - If no one else can help - and if you can find them - maybe you can hire the A-Team."

Carnahan promises to make a film that stays true to the show without "cheesing it up".

"You can ... make a film that reflects on the real world without losing the great sense of fun and the velocity of action in a classic summer popcorn film," he told Variety.

Carnahan and actor-turned-screenwriter Brian Bloom are polishing the Skip Woods (GI Joe) script at the moment, and Carnahan's put his Killing Pablo Escobar project on indefinite hold to put this first in his schedule, intending to start production this June for a June 11, 2010 release.

Producer Ridley Scott promises that this will be a "fast-paced, exciting franchise" and clearly sees this as just the first of many A-films. Frankly at this point we'd settle for one, so let's hope that this finally gets off the ground.

RE: Joe Carnahan To Direct A-Team
The A-Team is to famous to be adapted into a serious film. I think it would work better as a comedy similar to Starsky and Hutch. More

hannibal smith - if only nicholson was a bit younger, but possibly burt reynolds; BA - ving rhames; murdoch - jim carrey all the way; face - robert downey jr; if paul giamatti and ron perlman could work for christopher walken that would be mint as the terrorists More

George Clooney or Dennis Quaid as Hannibal, Ving Rhames or Michael Clarke Duncan as B.A., Jim Carrey or Steve Carrel as Murdoch and Owen Wilson or (left field) Will smith as face. Oh, I can hear the anger now.... And Tommy Lee Jones as Decker getting more and more unhinged as he chases them down... But the GMC van needs to stay exactly the same!!! More

I would like to see a cast who can play young and old versions of themselves. As 20-something year old commandos during the Gulf War and as they are 10-15 years later. My choices would be... Hannibal Smith - Russell Crowe, Nicholas Cage Faceman Peck - Sam Worthington, Ryan Phillippe, James Franco Howling Mad Murdoch - Sean William Scott, Giovanni Ribisi BA Baracus - Tyrese Gibson, Xzibit More

Give it a rest
Hate to go all Daily Mail but... So we'll get a film that concerns veterans of a confilct whose violent aftermath is still in the news, but presumably treated in the knockabout style of the oh-so-overrated show it's based on- eg no-one gets shot despite lots of bullets being sprayed around ? Tasteful Think I'd rather see a Charlie's Angels 3 instead.  More

HMMM CASTING CALL....
Assuming money is no object, this would be my cast; Hannibal -Jon Hamm, Face-Hayden Christensen, Murdoch-Jeffrey Combs (he's awesome in everything) B.A. Baracus Queen Latifah (no seriously, she's ace and they can do for that character what they did for Starbuck) opinions folks? More

Brilliant choice for director, all we need now is the cast...
How about ... Dennis Quaid/Bruce Willis as Hannibal, Woody Harrelson/Jason Bateman as Murdock, Robert Downey Jr/Tom Cruise as Face and Denzel Washington/Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as BA could work More

Oh, Yeah!
You don't want an Ocean's Enselmble again. I reckon that you would need to have Michael Clarke-Duncan for BA (mind you, I don' t know if he has the attitude), Pierce Brosnan would be a good Face (or Uncle Val Kilmer) , Jim Carrey for Murdoch (definitely!!!!!!!), Hannibal is a tough one. I reckon Clooney is too cheesy, but Bruce Willis could be good, or maybe James Woods. More

Duh duh duh duhduh duh
I thought this would never come to be, I hoped it wouldn't come to be as it was unbelivably cheesy. Fun but sometimes embarassing and usually very corny. I would also love to see Downey Jr. as Mr T but if this film wants to take itself seriously (well to a degree anyway) how about Micheal Clarke Duncan as Mr.T, Hugh Jackman or Josh Holloway as Face, Hugh or Jim Carrey as Murdock, and De Niro or Pacino as Hannibal (or Arnie as he's already got the cigar smaking thing going) More

he IS BA and it would just feel wrong, let alone unimaginable, as anybody else above all the other membersplus I'm sure he would still be up to the job. pray it's good but it the comment about making a film that reflects on the real world sounds like a mistake; the spirit of the show has always been escapist cheese, no one ever died for christ's sake! RE: Casting
I think the A Team should be braught back in game form rather than a movie similar to what they're doing with Ghostbusters.  It could work great as a game and the developers could recreate the look of the original characters like they have with Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray etc.  I'd much rather have a game based on the original tv series than a film which doesn't bare any resemblance to it whatsoever. They've got it all wrong
This could turn out to be good but it won't feel like or bare any relation to the original tv series. This movie will be the A - Team by name only. It'll have none of the original actors for a start and that's the very reason why the A - Team was so popular. It was those characters. More specifically it was how the actors played those characters. You just can't replicate that. I realise they're not really trying to. They're taking the central idea and are putting a new spin on it, but do More

COOL!
I like Carnahan a lot! Smoking Aces was, shall we say, patchy but very slick. Narc is one of my favourite films and it's really edgy. If Carnahan makes A-Team somewhere inbetween the two this could be something really special. But who could possibly take on these roles? More

The A Team
Used to watch the A Team as a kid and liked it, but always thought that with all the bullets flying around there never seemed to be anybody killed or any blood spilled. Suppose they didn't want to put you off your tea. Can't really see how this series could work as a movie other than straight to DVD. More
