New Transformers Toys Revealed!
Exclusive: First look at Soundwave

28 January 2009  |  Written by Helen O'Hara

Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is due out this summer, but if you just can't wait until June 26, here's a sneak peak at two of the new toys for the movie, which give a bit of a hint at the characters we'll be seeing.

Admittedly, we've seen the friendly Autobot Bumblebee - the yellow Camaro that befriended Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky in the 2007 original - before, but he's got a nice, shiny overhaul for the seconjd outing with a new front spoiler, cupholders, an 8-CD changer and plenty of room in the back for those long journeys.

But the second new toy is Soundwave, a dastardly Decepticon who almost made it into the first film, only to have his Transforming trademark (he turns into a cassette player) given to Frenzy. Still, Soundwave is something of a fan favourite and he has made it in this time around ,with something of an upgrade. The logical progression would have been to turn him into an MP3 player, but Bay and his team have instead turned Soundwave into a jet. A supersonic one, we're guessing.

RE: New Transformers Toys Revealed!
Frenzy didn't mass shift. He was a few feet tall and transformed into a tape deck.  He had a fight and was mangled down to just his head (and or torso).  Then he transformed into the phone. Pay attention! More

RE: What the fuck!!?
I will consider myself schooled in Trasnformers lore then!  I do appreciate there have been several (crapier) recent CGI versions of the transformers a bit like Power Rangers in various context but I think it's fair to say the reason this Trasnformers movie was made and has the mass apeal it does is because of the iconic 80's versions. Anyway I didn't know he was supposed to be a communications satelite... that's relevant to his role I guess. Just so long as they don't go messing around wi More

Good Lord it looks like things have gone to hell since I first signed in this morning. Making Soundwave into a telecommunications satelite seems perfectly valid to me. HE IS NOT GOING TO BE A JET PEOPLE! Well spoken LeChuck all valid points!!! 'Indy shooting Lazerbeams out of his eyes'. I nearly spat my coffee at my computer screen in the office then!! More

RE: What the fuck!!?
L: bronco3114 Fair enough to an extent but Megatron was basically a flying cannon of some description, Soundwave the jet doesn't even have a tentative link to the charcter it's based on. Like I said if it's not workable then it's not workable, just consign them to contexual drawing board. Besides if Bay was so worried about continuity to scale case how  could he explain Frenzy transfroming into a mobile phone? ell, one mistake you're making here is thinking More

RE: What the fuck!!?
Michael Bay made it clear before the first film that he won't have any Transformers who would inexplicably change mass/size in during transformation. That's why Megatron didn't turn into a handgun. So why should he have a retro-Soundwave in this one who transform into something even smaller? et it was ok for the big cube think to inexplicably change mass?  Megatron wasn't a gun because, like in the cartoon, it was fucking stupid for the main villian to need another villian to ope More

I'm all for not having mass shifting (turning a 20ft robot into a hand held boom box), but this Sound Wave looks too much like an Insecticon. Has none of the original charm. I just hope they have the original voice for him. I do have faith in Bay (when it comes to Transformers) to do a decent job, so I'll hold judgment until after I watch the movie More

Cool Mom!
Do you really think a walkman from the 80s would fit into a Transformers movie released in 2009? No....so get over it. As long as there's some sort of 'sound' related aspect to him, then that's as true as Bay needs to be to the character. More

What the fuck!!?
Soundwave is a cassett deck that ejects mini decepticons for goodness sake, update him to a CD player or some other mini decepticon spewing sound machine to make it relevant for this generation but he isn't a fucking jet!!! If you can't fit him in then just don't use him you already have Starscream or Scourge (I think). That has single handly sapped a good chuck of the enthusiasm I had for this film I'd have been content enough with no soundwave but half arsed pointless "updated" sound More

Admittedly, I'd say we're all disappointed slightly (and I am speaking for everyone here) as Soundwave was pretty perfect aesthetically, but he doesn't look all that bad and does fit nicely into the Bay's new style of robots.   My only gripe is the supersonic jet.   I read - which I now know was just a fanciful piece of fan boy writing - a plot summery of the new film, which contained a description of Soundwave as a sort of powerful sound conductor wi More

It's not really the same transformer if it doesn't resemble the original version at all! going back to the old school with more basic transformation rather than all of that OTT bollocks from the first film. think you're misunderestimating Baydom and judging by the fact that it's another jet, I would say you're wrong.
