Ok bottom right in the task bar there is a little white flag
Click on that and open action center.
Click on back up and restore (Bottom left of the action centre)

That will open a Wizard that will help you select exactly what you want to back up. You can choose from everything to certain folders etc. Then if your PC goes bang, you can use the back up to restore all the files you need.

Is this what you are looking for?

It might be! I've not got time to have a proper look yet, the hard drive isn't connected and it won't let me advance beyond a certain stage but I'll check it later and get back to you! Cheers.

I've just had a look and I think that's what I want to do. So if I do a full backup now and then decide to do another in, say, a fortnight will it be much quicker next time as it will just find and backup anything that's changed in the meantime?

This will indeed back up your computer, it does however put the files/folders into a set of large combined files (cab files i think).
So not a mirror of the files as such, so you wouldn't be able to take your 1tb disk to another pc and look at your photos/videos etc.

This'll help you http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore

Thanks for that. In the FAQs it says that the next backup will only save what's been changed since the last one, and you can search through the backup without having to restore everything. I'll give that a go later.

I've not had the chance yet

I've started it and it really seems to slow down the computer, and I've been using it pretty much constantly the last few days. I should be able to do it at the weekend.
