YEAR: 1992     FORMAT: SUPER NES

The 100 Greatest Games | 99 | Super Castlevania

For horror fans, Super Castlevania was the perfect nightmare. Culling many of its ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night from classic Universal horror flicks and Eastern European folklore, SC pitted players against Frankenstein's monster, mummies, vampires and golems in a swashbuckling adventure where the action revolved around using the hero's bullwhip to lash monsters and swing from chandeliers, which is still more satisfying and versatile than the whipcrackin' in any official Indiana Jones spin-off.

Memorable for...
Being ahead of its time. Using the Super NES' Mode 7 technology, Super Castlevania featured optical illusions that gave an impression of 3D space, making players feel as if they'd just stepped into the future.
