YEAR: 1987     FORMAT: ARCADE

The 100 Greatest Games | 97 | Double Dragon

The first arcade brawler to allow two player co-operative action, Double Dragon spawned two coin-op sequels, a swathe of console updates, an animated TV series, and even a live-action movie starring Robert Patrick. A simple side-scrolling fighter where players simply punched, kicked and jumped in their quest to save a kidnapped girl, Double Dragon also became a fan favourite thanks to the ability to snatch up weapons dropped by enemies and turn them against their owners. The result was a crude, merciless beat 'em up whose cartoonish visuals belied its dark heart.

Memorable for...
Pitting friend against friend. While the game was all about working together to save the girl, if you finished the adventure with a friend the final challenge was to duke it out with your partner for the damsel's affections, the last man standing winning a quick kiss for his monumental troubles.
