Resident Evil may be the benchmark for survival horror in 2009, but Capcom's horrifying series owes its existence to Alone In The Dark, the game that creating the terrifying genre in the first place. Inspired by the hellish scribblings of HP Lovecraft, what made AITD most famous was its use of 3D characters over flat, pre-rendered backgrounds, this ingenious approach coming closer than any game had before to photo-realism, and inspiring other developers to experiment with fresh approaches to presentation.

Gaining recognition. In 2008, Alone In The Dark's contribution to gaming history was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition, where it was named the 'first ever 3D survival horror game'.
