YEAR: 1994     FORMAT: ARCADE

The 100 Greatest Games | 90 | Daytona USA

While not the first coin-op game to put players behind a real steering wheel, Daytona USA allowed arcade owners to connect cabinets and create a fierce eight-player competition. Boasting three tracks that each posed their own unique challenges, Daytona USA remained an arcade stalwart longer than most other racers at the time, and the franchise was eventually revived on the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast where the consoles' sharp visuals captured the atmosphere of the arcade original, but couldn't touch the feeling of sliding into a cheap, sweaty plastic seat and emptying your pockets into the cabinet's hungry slot.

Memorable for...
Drawing people who would never have considered themselves gamers down to their local bowling alley just to pile in to the huge row of multiplayer cabinets. If you'd ever wanted to run your friends off the road, Daytona USA was the pastime of choice.
