YEAR: 1999     FORMAT: PC

The 100 Greatest Games | 83 | Homeworld

Epic in scope and operatic in delivery, Homeworld was that rare thing: a truly innovative RTS. Fully 3D with a 360 degree field of play and well-implemented Z-axis, Homeworld literally added a whole new dimension to the strategy formula as you lead your armada through hostile space on a quest to reclaim your home planet. The gradually unfolding technology tree was supplemented by the ability to 'salvage' (read: steal) enemy vessels and turn them against their former owners, which added an immense amount of enjoyment. Credit also to the creators for providing one of the most engaging RTS storylines around in the Kushan's desperate quest to find their way home.

Memorable for...
Returning from the first mission to find your world all but destroyed by the marauding Taidan. The devastation unfolds to the strains of Barber's Adagio for Strings and almost brings a tear to the eye.
