The 100 Greatest Games | 81 | SimCity 2000

YEAR: 1993     FORMAT: PC, MAC

The 100 Greatest Games | 81 | SimCity 2000

While largely identical in outlook and attitude to the original SimCity, SimCity 2000 refined the experience with a more engaging isometric view rather than a lofty overhead perspective, which allowed the colourful, undulating landscape to have different levels and hidden underground layers. More elaborate tools to create cityscapes and control your finances also made for a more rewarding affair, while the nifty query tool made it a cinch to keep an eye on your burgeoning urban sprawl street by street.

Memorable for...
Natural disasters. It's hard to explain the mentality behind spending hours on the construction of a teeming metropolis only to summon Godzilla and watch him tear it down. That it proved so irresistible probably says much about the state of humankind.
