One of the most critically acclaimed real-time strategy games of all time - and the recipient of a number of 'game of the year' awards on its 2006 release - Company Of Heroes is still hard to beat. While many World War II strategy developers get carried away with creating a beautifully-balanced RTS experience, COH unashamedly cranked the volume to the max with razor-sharp graphics, savage sound effects and fully destructible environments, the flashy presentation setting the game apart from its po-faced rivals and providing an explosive backdrop for the deep, complex and inventive gameplay. And with a clever matching system that brought gamers of similar skills together, battling online was always a pleasure and never forced naïve players to get their ass kicked by snickering RTS vets.

Memorable for...
Carentan Counterattack. The game's fourth mission is an RTS turtle's dream. You have ten minutes to secure the town of Carentan against an Axis assault. As soon as the clock runs out the Nazi onslaught begins and you'd better hope your perimeter holds.
