YEAR: 1999     FORMAT: PC

The 100 Greatest Games | 74 | Freespace 2

If Freespace 2 isn't remembered for its excellent storyline, that's only because the space combat gameplay was accomplished enough to obscure all else. Following on from Descent: Freespace, FS2 saw humanity cut off from Earth and once again fending off the expansionist tendencies of the marauding Shivans. Fighter to fighter combat had never been better, but it was the hulking capital ships with their deafening beam weapons that gave Freespace 2's conflicts such a sense of scale. The only down point to the game was that it ended on a cliffhanger, one that was never actually resolved.

Memorable for...
The game's modding community, which is still going strong ten years later. Among the user-generated goodies are an HD texture pack to update the game for modern machines and the standout: Beyond the Red Line, a Battlestar Galactica mod that is everything you could possibly want form a BSG game and entirely free. If you still have FS2 then be sure to pick it up.
