The 100 Greatest Games | 66 | Left 4 Dead

A gleefully tense shooter that pits a quartet of ragtag survivors against the undead horde, Left 4 Dead is arguably the single greatest co-operative experience ever devised. Lovingly crafted in the greatest Romero tradition, the game is split into four scenarios with no pretence of narrative, wherein the foursome (a biker, a student, an accountant and an aging Vietnam vet) must escape to safety from a sea of walking dead. Among the zombie ranks are a series of especially nasty super zombies, which other players can take control of in online play to really crank up the body count.

Memorable for...
The witch. A sobbing, girl zombie who wails into the night. Unless, that is, you shine a torch at her, make too much noise or otherwise disturb her private pity party. Then it's blood, pain, running and screaming.
