YEAR: 1996     FORMAT: PS2

The 100 Greatest Games | 62 | Tekken 2

Virtua Fighter was the granddaddy of the 3D fighter but it was Tekken and its vastly superior sequel that brought polygonal fisticuffs to the masses. Featuring an array of colourful characters from around the world (including a lizard, a bear and a kangaroo called Roger) Tekken 2 boasted an incredible cross-section of styles and fighting techniques from Jack 2's mechanical brawling to Bruce's fluid Muay Thai. One of the most celebrated fighting landmarks, Tekken 2 even warranted a namecheck in Shaun of the Dead.

Memorable for...
The feeling of sheer fist-clenching, teeth-grinding, scrotum-shrinking rage that grips you like an anally retentive lobster when some button-bashing newbie picks Marshall Law and kicks your ass, despite you having spent hours perfecting the ultimate 'xoL1trianglesquaresquareleftR1' finger-spraining combo. Bastards.
