YEAR: 1999     FORMAT: PC

The 100 Greatest Games | 59 | Age Of Empires II: The Age Of Kings

The follow up to Microsoft's empire-building original, Age Of Kings refined the traditional RTS experience and brought more personality to the proceedings. Eschewing spearmen and hoplites in favour of mounted knights and longbowmen, AOEII literally went medieval on your ass, bringing all the joys of chivalry, conquest and pillage to your PC. Enormous armies, majestic castles and raining bloody fury on your enemies, there's nothing here that's not to love.

Memorable for...
Choice. Not only were there five historical campaigns, but when setting out on your journey of conquest in multiplayer players could pick from a total of thirteen races, each with their own unique perks.
