The 100 Greatest Games | 58 | Championship Manager

Given how famous the Championship Manager series has become, it's hard to believe the original game was written in a geek's bedroom. Conceived by brothers Paul and Oliver Collyer, and first published on the Amiga and Atari ST in 1992, the series has continued to evolve and introduce new elements each year, and is now a firm favourite with armchair managers who'll happily sit in their pants and rattle away on their keyboard through the night until the sun comes up.

Memorable for...
The power of word-of-mouth. When the first game was released, it was given a lukewarm reception by critics and paled in comparison to its management rivals. However, fan-to-fan recommendations in the small British gaming community at the time helped change the fortunes of the series, and paved the way for Championship Manager to become the evergreen favourite it is today.
