YEAR: 1999     FORMAT: PLAYSTATION

The 100 Greatest Games | 54 | Silent Hill

The first serious contender for Resident Evil's survival horror crown, Silent Hill took the conventions of gore gaming and used psychological terrors to unsettle gamers where RE was happy to dish out short, sharp shocks. From the nightmare at the beginning of the game where the camera bends at impossible angles to throw players off-kilter, to the disturbing sequences where you beat skinned zombie children to death with a lead pipe, Silent Hill offers a genuinely distressing experience and remains one of videogaming's most haunting adventures.

Memorable for...
Static. Whether it was the thick fog or inky blackness, you could rarely see beyond the tip of your nose, but the disconcerting crackle of your pocket radio indicated unspeakable monstrosities were just out of sight.
