Released as part of the Half-Life 2 expansion package The Orange Box, Portal is worth the price of admission alone. Challenging players to travel around the levels and solve a variety of puzzles using a portable teleportation device, Portal achieves the impossible by being brain-bendingly complicated and intuitively simple at the same time, often wrong-footing players by making them believe a task is impossible, right up until the moment the solution suddenly 'clicks'. Hugely addictive and immensely rewarding, the only criticism of Portal is that it's too short and should be re-released with a hundred more levels to satisfy hungry fans.

GLaDOS, the initially helpful but ultimately quite insane AI that guides you through the levels with the promise of cake.
