When the first screen shots of Metroid Prime leaked onto fan forums in 2002, fanboys moaned that one of Nintendo's greatest adventure games was about to be transformed into a first-person shooter. How wrong they were. Viewed through the eyes of the heroine - but still focused on the exploration, upgrading and puzzling that characterises earlier Metroids - Prime is a slow-burning story of sci-fi terror that unfolds gradually, detail by gory detail, and inextricably winds players into the experience. If you can ever work out where in heaven's name you're supposed to go next, that is.
