With the original Silent Hill quickly establishing itself as a serious rival to Capcom's Resident Evil juggernaut, a sequel was no surprise. This time, while the nightmarish visual style and strong focus on creating a disconcerting atmosphere were largely the same, Silent Hill 2 worked harder to mess with players' minds and make them question the sanity of their avatar, suddenly removing treasured items you assumed were a vital part of the story, or totally changing the appearance of locations once you'd finished exploring them. Packed with psychological scares, this was the ideal counterpoint to Resident Evil's cheap jumps and remains one of the most unsettling games ever created.
