The 100 Greatest Games | 40 | Deus Ex

A cyberpunk adventure that blended a traditional first-person shooting perspective with strong role-playing elements, Deus Ex was one of the first hybrid genre games to successfully marry two radically different styles and entice fans of both. Offering players a huge variety of choices as the adventure unfolds - and several denouements depending on the path they chose - Deus Ex was also irresistible because of its expansive environments and ambitious storyline, the game's multilayered plot and clever use of dialogue helping to create an atmosphere more like a Hollywood blockbuster than a videogame.

Memorable for...
: Paranoia. Conspiracies are one of the main themes in Deus Ex, and the game is a perennial favourite with nutjobs obsessed with theories such as Area 51, cow mutilations, aliens and the Knights Templar.
