The 100 Greatest Games | 4 | Call Of Duty 4

Breaking with the franchise's WWII tradition, COD4 sought to bring the action into the 21st century and developer Infinity Ward nailed it dead on. The flawless single-player campaign is worth the price alone (the Ghillies In The Mist sniping mission being a standout), but the game truly shines as the apotheosis of online multiplayer action. Tightly structured maps, frenetic yet tactically nuanced action and the ability to tailor perks and loadouts to your specific playstyle make this one of the most fulfilling multiplayer experiences available on any platform.

Memorable for...
Adding depth to the blasting with RPG elements that allow you to level-up as you play online, unlocking abilities and weapons as you go. The insane part? Hardcore players voluntarily reset to zero upon reaching the level cap, starting all over again for the sake of a prestige tag.
