YEAR: 2006     FORMAT: PS2

The 100 Greatest Games | 35 | Shadow Of The Colossus

Styled to look like a Zelda-esque fantasy adventure, Shadow Of The Colossus had more in common with a puzzle game and stripped away the traditional RPG dungeon crawling and villager chatting in favour of brain-bending boss battles. Identifying each monster's weakness and exploiting it was the key to success in Team Ico's oddball masterpiece, but it was the luscious presentation, imaginative creatures and epic soundtrack that made critics swoon and claim the title went beyond mere gaming and should be considered a work of art.

Memorable for...
Beauty in the beast. Unlike the bad-to-the-bone monsters found in most fantasy quests, each of the monsters in Colossus came across as having depth and personality, meaning that players often felt bad when they'd toppled a titan.
