The 100 Greatest Games | 30 | Resident Evil 4

After years of assaulting players with unwieldy controls and lumbering zombies, Resident Evil 4 brought Capcom's terrifying series screaming up to date and introduced a new generation to the joys of survival horror. Shifting the action to an undisclosed Spanish village - and ditching the claustrophobic corridors of the series' George A Romero-inspired cities - and a new over-the-shoulder, action friendly-viewpoint elevated RE4 to the status of instant classic, and paved the way for 2009's RE5 and its creepy African landscapes.

Memorable for...
Agile undead. When the bloodshed begins, the action immediately wrongfoots the Resi hardcore by confronting them with infected antagonists who run, dodge attacks and hurl grenades, unlike the brain-dead zombies that shuffled through Resident Evils 1-3.
