The 100 Greatest Games | 23 | Halo 3

YEAR: 2007     FORMAT: XBOX 360

The 100 Greatest Games | 23 | Halo 3

After alienating many of the people who adored the original Halo by forcing players to take control of a rubbish alien for much of the sequel and ending halfway through the story, the Halo franchise enjoyed a sparkling return to form for in part three. Once again thrusting players into the thick of humanity's fight for survival in the face of overwhelming odds, Halo 3 allowed players to step back into the steel boots of one-man army The Master Chief - now in glorious HD. It ditched the fashionable sneaking of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell in favour of balls-out trigger pumpin', grenade tossin', alien smashin' ultraviolence that made you feel 10ft tall and able to punch holes in solid concrete. Once you'd finished the fight, there was fiendishly addictive multiplayer mode and the Forge, one of the most intuitive, flexible and downright fun level construction features ever conceived.

Memorable for...
Scarabs. Towering robotic spiders that scuttle onto the battlefield forcing players to use whatever weapons come to hand to wear them down. Then you realise you can hop onboard the animatronic arachnid and take it out in half the time, from the inside!
