Don't be fooled by its oddball visuals, cutesy characters and cartoon racetracks - Super Mario Kart is the world's cruellest game. One of the first great multiplayer racers, what made SMK so compelling was the special powers you could collect along the track; a red shell here and mushroom there helping you zip from the back of the pack into first place, much to the chagrin of the race leaders who'd used genuine skill to nudge their way into pole position. The fiercest racer of all time, Mario's surreal mash-up was responsible for ending more beautiful relationships than adultery, alcohol and weekend trips to Ikea combined.

Memorable for...
The heated debates over which character you wanted to play as, and the myriad toys thrown out of prams when players didn't get to play as their favourite. "Fuck you! I want to be Yoshi�"
