Why He's On The List: Poor box-office aside, there's no taking away from the fact that Mal is one of the best characters in recent sci-fi. It's largely thanks to Fillion's solid grasp of the role, playing the ship's captain as an imperfect leader who's frequently bested in verbal sparring by his shipmates, but who is unquestionably the top dog among them. Like a Han Solo for the new age, we hope he'll be given more chances for adventure.
Finest Hour: Making time for banter with Inara even while springing the Operative's trap.
